Heathers the Musical

“Before Mean Girls’  The Plastics, there were Heathers.  And now they’re back, with more laughs, and singing.”

Heathers the Musical is a great reminder that there were mean girls before “Mean Girls,” and they were vicious. In this case, they’re also engaging and entertaining. Larry O’Keefe’s poignant lyrics, exemplified by the opening song, “Beautiful,” gets us on Veronica Sawyer’s side – with a smile – from the get go.  It sets us up for a surprisingly sympathetic tale of murder with more than its fair share of humor, and a little heartbreak. Meanwhile, Andy Fickman’s skillful direction makes this production in a small theatre feel full scale. And the cast is top-notch. Barrett Wilbert Weed gave a phenomenal performance, fully embodying Veronica Sawyer. If you’re going to relive the ‘80s, Heathers the Musical is the way to do it.
